This flat file, for maps, charts, blueprints, etc., is made of heartwood poplar, with cherry drawer sides & white pine drawer bottoms. It stands 52" high, is 32" wide & 24" deep. There are 6 drawers. Their depths are graduated - from the bottom up: 3.875", 3.75", 3", 2.875", 2.75", 2.5" The piece was inspired by a trip my son & I took out west into the Four Corners area at the height of spring. Vast geological layers etched together with earthen tones of red to white to brown to pink, then peppered over with bright green grasses - & like sunlight bouncing off ice - the desert flowers sat atop the greenery. A bewitching mixture of desolation, layered color and texture. There were two poplar boards in the shop I'd been holding onto for some 10 years. Knowing poplars, whites, greens, yellows, browns & blacks, coupled with these boards unusually rich & vibrant heartwood, they were to be the perfect pallet for pulling out what the desert had quietly set in me. All the colors of the file are in the wood - no stains, no added color - just the poplar, cherry & pine with hand-rubbed wax atop 3 coats of linseed oil. |
