The drawers sides of the flat file are made with cherry native to Catawba Co., NC.. It has a deep orange/red patina. I chose this wood because when used with the poplar, it creates the stark contrasts of red, white, yellow & green that so captivated me while in the desert.
The jointery for the drawers is a 'through' dovetail. Though somewhat unorthodox, I chose this over the 'half-blind', as the latter would have hidden the dark red pins from view. Along with the delicate, hand-turned drawer pulls of the same cherry, these elements, popping through down the edge of the case, helped strike into the piece the layered, vibrant earthen colors the desert had affixed in my head.
